What happens when science meets art? Students explored that question with Rainbow Lava Lamps! First, we learned the science of color mixing and the spectrum (R.O.Y.G.B.I.V) as they used the 3 primary colors (red, yellow, blue) to mix secondary colors (orange, green, purple). Did you know the pointallists used the newly discovered rods and cones in the biology of the eye, along with the first microscopes,to place small dots of color next to each other, in order to let the eye do the “color mixing”? (Your child may learn more on a Museum Adventure!) We added mineral oil to our colored water/oil solutions and noticed the density differences of the liquids. Do you know which one has less density and floats on top? Add an Alka Seltzer tablet to create an amazing bubbling “Lava” effect!
Campers reminisced and told their unique stories about their summers, then built their stories 3D as they created Summer Vacation Memory Dioramas! They learned about the properties of wax crayons & oil craypas and why they resist liquid watercolors, creating layered textures with lines and dots. After painting the outside of the boxes, the kids sculpted with Model Magic, Floam, and nature-themed 3D materials like real shells and miniature trees to build their environments. Our students were so diligent and focused, so the finished products turned out great!
Julia, age 8
Art Adventures Studio students (aged 8-13) used pallet knives to layer their two-week large sand painting project. They experimented with texture as they added sand to acrylic paint, along with various techniques, to express their favorite subject matter of this summer.
Willa, age 10
Art Adventures students (aged 3-7) mixed acrylic paint and sand to layer their own seascapes! They practiced properly using palette knives to thickly apply the paint, as if they were icing a cake. They added 3D finishing touches of natural found objects such as shells, rocks, real sponge (and sparkly fish;) For ages 2-3’s, we 1st read the story Rainbow Fish, then made mini-aquariums. The final products were stunning and brought us back to summertime at the beach, and all the things we can collect to make art!
Agnes, age 5
Dont’ miss out! Now that your kids are settled into thier fall schedules, you may find there’s time to still register for a FALL CLASS: Many class times are available. Again, this is our last semerster at All Souls Church. Let’s make it the best one yet, together!
