Blast from the Past:

CCA ‘s repeat attendance enabled us to search for brand new art to teach each year. In January 2011, we explored exciting ways that regular old paper can be transformed into fantastic art. We studied a variety of artists and their techniques including: Mia Pearlman, Andrea Dezsö and Betrice Coron. Here you see the first stage of our cut paper mobiles project inspired by Mia Pearlman. Students each made at least two drawings with one featuring curvy shapes and one with angle shapes. The next step was to cut out some of the shapes created. Choosing which shapes to cut out, which to leave and just how much negative space to keep around the shapes were important decisions each student had to make about their artwork. The next phase included assembling the pieces into a paper mobile. Here are some end results!

This studio class is a place for students to use the artistic process as a means to make choices to express who they are as individuals.

Students are introduced to modern and contemporary artists using a wide variety of media and techniques including: paint, specialty pencils, pastels, charcoal, blending tools, clay, wood, plaster, wire, fabric, stop-motion animation and more.  Students also learn techniques to recreate what they see through live model drawing (clothed) and still life.  There will be a focus on portfolio building for older students.  Please visit the Art Adventures page for more information.

Myriad museums and galleries of NYC provide us with ample ideas from which to create, keeping our curriculum current with the art world of today. Students take 2 trips to U.E.S. galleries and Museums during the semester to be inspired in their own processes.  Visiting contemporary artists also share their techniques in this class.  Sketchbooks are kept in class to reinforce topics and to record development throughout the year.

Using a wide range of interesting art materials such as clay, wire, eyedroppers, diverse painting tools and techniques (to name a few) children explore, identify and reinforce language, colors, shapes, numbers while practicing motor skills and appropriate art language in a fun and nurturing environment. Adults engage in this class while learning techniques to foster the joy of learning art as well as age appopriate art language.  Each class begins with our unique group “sticky mural” decoration, with thematic items changing each week. Song and storytelling are included in this comprehensive class.  Through all of our activities, our goal is to promote confidence through choice-making as well as the freedom of self-expression while applauding and encouraging each stage of development.
