How do we combine Halloween and Art History?

Get ready for spook-tacular Art Adventures this Halloween! Create memories that will last a lifetime with our art-history inspired projects. Join us as we study Damien Hirst’s diamond skull, Giacometti’s eerie figures, Tim Burton’s skeletons and Yayoi Kusama’s playful pumpkins and infinity rooms to create hauntingly fun masterpieces! Scroll to hear about our final semester.

Damien Hirst’s “For the Love of God” is an iconic work that features a life-sized human skull encrusted with over 8,000 diamonds, making it one of the most expensive artworks ever created. We designed an engaging, kid-friendly lesson inspired by Hirst’s diamond skull, where children can “bling up” their own skulls using colorful gems and jewels! For older groups, we offer a sculpting experience where they can create their own skulls, deepening their understanding of human anatomy. This hands-on activity enhances their ability to draw and sculpt faces as they are able to recognize the simpler shapes that lie beneath the skin.

Another one of our favorite projects is inspired by Alberto Giacometti’s iconic spindly figures! In CCA classes, workshops and tours, our artists explore the unique beauty of these elongated sculptures, learning how to capture movement and emotion in their own creations. Kids create wire armatures as the base of their figure, then wrap it in plaster gauze! By experimenting with form and proportion, participants will discover the magic of Giacometti’s style while developing their own artistic voices.

Giacometti’s The Nose & our Halloween version of his Surrealist sculpture

How do we keep the learning going @ home? Each project comes with an overview for parents to see what are the goals, share the vocabulary used, and see the choices their children made. We also create a photo gallery for each class we share with you weekly to see your children in action in class. This serves as yet another level of learning, memory and sharing their experience with you, as they, too, see themselves in action!

Want to see a Giacometti sculpture in person? The MoMA has several of his works on view in their permanent collection! The Metropolitan Museum of Art also exhibits select pieces, including the cat we make on our Museum Adventures!

French-born artist Louise Bourgeois has given CCA many wonderful ideas for sculptural art projects, from her Personnages series to these uniquely haunting spider sculptures! Children learn about armatures (skeletal structures), adding the ‘muscles’’ with model magic and the ‘skin’ with paint! Then we unleash the décor to personalize.
